Powerline Adapters Explained: Networking Through Mains Wiring

Powerline adapters solve one specific problem: getting a solid internet connection to a room your Wi-Fi cannot reach and where you cannot run an Ethernet cable. Instead of sending data through the air like an extender, or through a new cable you would have to drill for, powerline uses the electrical wiring already in your walls. For a home office at the end of the house, a games console upstairs, or a smart TV that keeps buffering, it is often the simplest fix there is. This guide explains how powerline works, the two competing standards, the speeds you can realistically expect, and when it beats the alternatives.

How powerline adapters work

You always buy powerline adapters in a pair (or a kit of three). One adapter plugs into a wall socket near your router and connects to it with a short Ethernet cable. The second plugs into a socket in the room you want to reach, and gives you either an Ethernet port for a wired device or, on Wi-Fi models, a fresh Wi-Fi hotspot in that room. The two adapters talk to each other through your home’s mains wiring, turning the electrical circuit into a data cable.

Setup is genuinely quick. Plug both in, press the pairing button on each, and they find each other and encrypt the link, usually in under five minutes. There is no app to fight with and no network settings to configure for a basic wired setup.

HomePlug AV2 vs G.hn

The one thing that trips buyers up is that powerline comes in two standards that do not talk to each other. HomePlug AV2 is the long-established standard with the widest range of products, used by brands like TP-Link. G.hn is the newer standard, backed by the likes of Devolo (its Magic range) and Zyxel, with higher theoretical speeds up to around 2,400 Mbps.

The critical point: HomePlug AV2 and G.hn adapters cannot communicate. Mix the two and you simply end up with two separate networks running side by side and no connection between them. So whichever standard you start with, buy any extra adapters to match. Pick one system and stick to it.

The speeds on the box are not the speeds you get

Powerline adapters are sold with big numbers, AV600, AV1000, AV2000, or G.hn figures like 2400. Those are theoretical maximums measured in ideal lab conditions, and you will not see them. In a real home, throughput usually lands somewhere around 300 to 500 Mbps, and often lower, depending on the age of your wiring, the distance between sockets, and the electrical noise from other appliances.

That is still plenty for streaming, video calls and gaming, and far more stable than a weak Wi-Fi signal, so the lower real-world figure is not a dealbreaker. Just buy based on what you actually need rather than the headline number, and treat the box figure as marketing, not a promise.

Getting the best out of powerline

A few practical rules make the difference between powerline that flies and powerline that disappoints.

  • Plug directly into the wall. Never use an extension lead, a multi-plug strip or a surge-protected socket. These filter and add noise to exactly the signal powerline relies on, and will cripple your speeds. Straight into the wall socket, every time.
  • Stay on the same circuit. Powerline works best when both adapters are on the same ring main. Older or larger houses sometimes split upstairs and downstairs onto separate circuits or even separate consumer units, and the signal weakens or fails when it has to cross between them.
  • Consider passthrough models. These have a socket built into the front, so you do not lose the wall outlet you plugged into. Worth the small extra cost where sockets are scarce.
  • Keep the security on. Adapters encrypt the link with AES, which stops a neighbour who shares your wiring from seeing your traffic. Press the pair button to set it rather than leaving adapters unpaired.

Powerline vs mesh vs extender

Powerline is not always the right answer. A Wi-Fi extender rebroadcasts your existing signal and is cheapest, but it only helps where some signal already reaches. A mesh system replaces your Wi-Fi with several units for whole-home coverage and is the best all-round fix, but costs more. Powerline is the one to choose when the target room has little or no Wi-Fi signal and running a cable is not practical, especially if you want a wired connection at the far end.

A good rule of thumb: for a single dead room where you want a rock-solid wired link, powerline. For patchy Wi-Fi across the whole house, mesh. What is a powerline adapter? A powerline adapter is a device that carries your internet connection through your home’s electrical wiring. You use a pair: one plugs in near the router and connects to it by Ethernet, and the other plugs into a socket in another room to provide a wired port or a Wi-Fi hotspot there. It is a way to reach rooms Wi-Fi cannot.

How fast are powerline adapters really? Despite box figures of 1000 or 2000 Mbps, real-world speeds are usually around 300 to 500 Mbps and sometimes less, depending on wiring age, distance and electrical interference. That is still fast enough for streaming, gaming and video calls, and more stable than weak Wi-Fi.

Do powerline adapters work on any house? They work in most homes but perform best when both sockets are on the same electrical circuit. In older or larger houses where upstairs and downstairs are on separate circuits or consumer units, powerline can be slow or fail to connect. Always plug straight into the wall, never an extension lead.

Can I mix different brands of powerline adapter? Only if they use the same standard. HomePlug AV2 and G.hn adapters cannot communicate, so a TP-Link HomePlug unit will not pair with a Devolo G.hn Magic unit. You can sometimes mix brands within the same standard, but the safest approach is to stick to one brand and standard.

Are powerline adapters better than a Wi-Fi extender? For reaching a room with little or no existing Wi-Fi signal, yes, because an extender needs some signal to rebroadcast, while powerline sends data through the wiring instead. An extender is cheaper and fine for topping up an already-weak signal, but powerline gives a more stable link, especially wired.

Do powerline adapters use a lot of electricity? No. Powerline adapters draw only a few watts each, similar to a phone charger, so running a pair adds very little to your electricity bill. Leaving them plugged in continuously is normal and inexpensive.
