How powerline adapters work
You always buy powerline adapters in a pair (or a kit of three). One adapter plugs into a wall socket near your router and connects to it with a short Ethernet cable. The second plugs into a socket in the room you want to reach, and gives you either an Ethernet port for a wired device or, on Wi-Fi models, a fresh Wi-Fi hotspot in that room. The two adapters talk to each other through your home’s mains wiring, turning the electrical circuit into a data cable.

The one thing that trips buyers up is that powerline comes in two standards that do not talk to each other. HomePlug AV2 is the long-established standard with the widest range of products, used by brands like TP-Link. G.hn is the newer standard, backed by the likes of Devolo (its Magic range) and Zyxel, with higher theoretical speeds up to around 2,400 Mbps.
The critical point: HomePlug AV2 and G.hn adapters cannot communicate. Mix the two and you simply end up with two separate networks running side by side and no connection between them. So whichever standard you start with, buy any extra adapters to match. Pick one system and stick to it.
The speeds on the box are not the speeds you get
Powerline adapters are sold with big numbers, AV600, AV1000, AV2000, or G.hn figures like 2400. Those are theoretical maximums measured in ideal lab conditions, and you will not see them. In a real home, throughput usually lands somewhere around 300 to 500 Mbps, and often lower, depending on the age of your wiring, the distance between sockets, and the electrical noise from other appliances.
That is still plenty for streaming, video calls and gaming, and far more stable than a weak Wi-Fi signal, so the lower real-world figure is not a dealbreaker. Just buy based on what you actually need rather than the headline number, and treat the box figure as marketing, not a promise.
Getting the best out of powerline
A few practical rules make the difference between powerline that flies and powerline that disappoints.
- Plug directly into the wall. Never use an extension lead, a multi-plug strip or a surge-protected socket. These filter and add noise to exactly the signal powerline relies on, and will cripple your speeds. Straight into the wall socket, every time.
- Stay on the same circuit. Powerline works best when both adapters are on the same ring main. Older or larger houses sometimes split upstairs and downstairs onto separate circuits or even separate consumer units, and the signal weakens or fails when it has to cross between them.
- Consider passthrough models. These have a socket built into the front, so you do not lose the wall outlet you plugged into. Worth the small extra cost where sockets are scarce.

Powerline is not always the right answer. A Wi-Fi extender rebroadcasts your existing signal and is cheapest, but it only helps where some signal already reaches.
